New Generation Rural / Regional Affiliations
Working in collaboration with Stroudwater Advisors and SSB Consulting, C.R. Slaton & Associates has developed a new approach for Large Regional Systems and Rural Critical Access Hospitals to work together. While Rural Hospitals and Districts need access to services and new revenue, most don’t want to give up community control of the board. Most large regional systems don’t have the management support that understands the challenges of rural hospitals and are concerned about exposing themselves to the volatility of the financial performance of these rural affiliates. They are also concerned about the issues related to consolidation of the rural hospitals’ debt.
Our New Generation Rural Affiliation project has solved both problems: Rural Community Boards get to keep control of their boards and ownership of their hospitals. The Large Regional System isn’t required to purchase, or lease the rural affiliate. There’s no consolidation of debt or financials between the affiliated parties.
The Rural Hospital benefits because of new revenue created through cost report benefits. In our recent projects, that benefit has been between $800,000 and $1.3 million dollars per year per rural affiliate. The large regional system benefits through its relationship with the rural providers. CRS&A provides management and patient management programs & services that help move high acuity patients to the Large Regional system, and return these patients to the rural hospital as quickly as possible. It’s an approach that works for both parties.
